ExactMouse Redux – alternative to the SteelSeries ExactMouse Tool for macOS

Legal notice / Rechtliche Hinweise

English

Unofficial project. ExactMouse Redux is independent software by Maximilian Dahl (@iamadesignerusually). It is not a SteelSeries product. It is not affiliated with, endorsed, sponsored, approved or supported by SteelSeries ApS or any of its affiliates.

Inspiration. This project was inspired by the SteelSeries ExactMouse Tool, a free Mac utility that SteelSeries released in 2010. For years many Mac gamers used it to switch off mouse acceleration. When it stopped working reliably on macOS 27, ExactMouse Redux was written from scratch as an independent alternative. Its three modes (Always On, On, Off) follow the behaviour of the original. Credit for the original idea goes to SteelSeries.

The name. “Redux” means “brought back”. The name ExactMouse Redux names the original tool as its inspiration, so that people looking for it can find a working alternative. It is not meant to suggest that this is an official version or successor from SteelSeries. If SteelSeries ApS objects to the name, it will be changed.

Trademarks. “SteelSeries”, “ExactMouse” and related names and logos are trademarks or registered trademarks of SteelSeries ApS. They are used here only descriptively: to name the original tool that inspired this project and to describe compatibility, for example with SteelSeries mice. That use does not imply any connection with the trademark owner, or endorsement by it.

No third-party code or assets. The app and this repository contain no source code, binaries, images, icons, documentation or other material from SteelSeries. All code, texts and icons are original work. Functionality and behaviour as such are not protected by copyright. ExactMouse Redux re-implements the behaviour independently, using public macOS APIs. Since version 3.4 the app no longer offers any way to show SteelSeries artwork.

Compatibility only. SteelSeries products are mentioned only to describe compatibility, for example when SteelSeries mice are detected by their USB vendor ID. The app does not talk to SteelSeries devices through proprietary protocols and does not change their firmware.

Privacy. The app does not collect or send any personal data. It only connects to GitHub: to check for the latest version, and, when you install an update, to download it. Usage statistics are counts only, with no keystrokes, positions or window contents. They stay on your Mac in ~/Library/Application Support/ExactMouse Redux/.

License. © 2026 Maximilian Dahl, all rights reserved. ExactMouse Redux is proprietary software. Use, warranty and liability are governed by the license agreement. Versions up to and including 3.7.5 were published under the MIT License, which continues to apply to copies of those versions obtained at the time.

Rights holders. If you represent SteelSeries ApS or another rights holder and have concerns about this project, including its name, please open an issue or contact the maintainer through GitHub. Reasonable requests, such as a change of name, will be handled promptly and in good faith.

Inoffizielles Projekt.
